Since the publication of her book, Terri Severin has continued her mission of conveying a message of hope and resilience of the human spirit. Her outreach includes engaging with individuals coping with trauma, and with such diverse audiences as: first responders; mental health professionals; hospital staff; elected officials; emergency management personnel; fire department personnel and civic organizations. Experts have credited Terri’s presentations with articulating families’ needs and positioning family assistance at the forefront of response plans for mass fatality events of all types. This awareness enables individuals to approach disaster response with a more humane and informed perspective.
She has contributed to the improvement of mass fatality planning and family assistance, working with organizations such as major airlines, international foundations for family assistance, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Harris County (Texas) Department of Education. Terri’s book has been utilized as an ancillary resource during workshops.
Terri was instrumental in the passage of the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act of 1996, federal legislation guiding aviation disaster response. In the process, she collaborated with and earned the cooperation of survivors and victims’ families, government agencies, legal counsel, and media outlets. The Act now influences aviation disaster response worldwide, as well as response efforts in natural and man-made disasters.
Terri also founded the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Project, where she completed research on the subject of aviation disaster family assistance. A first-of-its kind survey was created and distributed to victims’ families of multiple aviation disasters to assess the effectiveness of the Act sixteen years after its passage. The results quantified the strengths and weaknesses of the response process.
She founded Families of 4184, the association dedicated to the legacy of that tragedy. Terri has participated in state and national press conferences, appeared in international industry training videos, and was also featured on a nationally broadcast inquiry into aviation disaster family assistance. She has personal experience in memorial design and development, event planning, media relations, and fundraising.
Terri is certified in hospice, having worked at a Veterans Administration hospital in the Chicago area; a member of her local Department of Homeland Security's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT); and is a Prayer Chaplain.
Terri is owner and publisher of North Cross Press.
